"Convenient location and our most favorite stay in Peru!" por  Louise Myers

Arriving to the Sanctuary Lodge after 4 days of hiking the Inca Trail is like finding a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. We arrived at 7am on a Sunday after hiking the last leg of the Inca Trail from Winaywayna. It was heaven to walk out of the gate of the park and within a few steps, walk in to the lodge. I had trained for the 26 mile trek but was still so sore I could barely walk. I was thankful we didn’t have to wait for a bus then take a 30 minute ride down to Aguas Calientes just to check in and come back up. Even though check in isn’t until 11am, they welcomed us in. We were escorted to the restaurant where they do check in since their lobby is very small. We were offered drinks while we completed our paperwork. After 4 days of camping we had quite a bit of laundry which we turned in during our in-processing. Our room wasn’t ready yet but they showed us where the dayroom was if we wanted to clean up. They also took care of our bags. Afterwards we went back to the ruins to explore since it was so foggy we could barely see anything when we arrived and the fog was lifting (it was now around 9am, don’t be discouraged if it is foggy when you arrive, it always tends to lift). When I returned to the lodge, I went straight for a massage while my husband explored the ruins some more. By the end of our stay my husband and I would fondly refer to the masseuse as “The Punisher”. She was very good but intense. If you like deep tissue massages, you will love her. Once I was done, our room was ready. I could not wait to see it as we had decided to reward ourselves and book the Suite, room #28. We figure this stay was going to be a once in a lifetime experience so we wanted to go all out. I went back and forth between the suite and a Mountain View room. I opted for the suite once I found the Mountain View rooms overlook the front of the hotel where the buses turn around all day. I found a video link on youtube that shows exactly what you will see out your window if you opt for a Mtn view room in case you are curious: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=awHbpw7m0fo The suite was GORGEOUS and the views SPECTACULAR! The terrace overlooks the busy entrance to the park but the room is very quiet once the windows are closed. It was wonderful to sit on the terrace with a glass of wine in the evening after the last bus had left and feel like you were the only ones on the mountain. Plus you could lie in bed and see Huayna Picchu. The staff was super accommodating and helpful. We had a voucher for lunch on the day we arrived but since everything at the hotel is included in your stay the hotel let us use it the next day after we checked out. Even though vouchers are for the buffet restaurant, guests of the hotel can use the lobby entrance instead of the other entrance that is for the crowds who are visiting the ruins for the day. The food was delicious and the wine was very good. Their dayroom was a welcome perk since check out is 9am. It was super nice, clean and always stocked with fresh towels so you could shower before heading to the train station. Staying at the Sanctuary Lodge was an amazing experience and was the most favorite hotel of our vacation. The décor really is rustic luxury. The service was above and beyond. Add to all of this the location and there is nowhere more perfect to stay. Staying here does allow you to be first in line to get in the park unless those that walk up from AC beat you. The convenient location alone is worth paying the sky high room rates. Tips: If possible, avoid Machu Picchu on a Sunday. It was claustrophobic crowded. We found out the local people can visit for free on Sundays along with a reduced train fare from Cusco. Monday was much nicer. There seemed to be half the people as the day before. If you can hike the Inca trail, DO IT! It made the whole trip for us. Machu Picchu is amazing but we thought the ruins along the trail were equally breathtaking and often you find yourselves being the only ones in them even in the peak season. If you want to hike Huayna Picchu, they only give out 400 tickets a day. You get these from the gate to Huayna Picchu in the back side of the park. All tickets are gone before 9am. The first 200 in line get to go up at 0700, the second 200 get numbered tickets and have to come back, get in line and be ready to go up at 1000. If you want to visit the Temple of the Moon, this is inside the gate to Huayna Picchu so you have to get one of the 400 tickets to go. If you aren’t lucky enough to be one of those 400, the hike up Machu Picchu Mountain is just as rewarding and is much higher than Huayna Picchu. It is a tough hike but the views are worth it. If you can’t swing a stay at the Sanctuary Lodge or they are booked, the Inkaterra Machu Picchu hotel in Aguas Calientes was voted #98 of the Top 100 Hotels in the World by Travel and Leisure for 2008.
